This remote area teems with abundant wildlife such as lions, elephants, black rhinos and giraffes, as well as a variety of birdlife featuring flamingos, ostriches, eagles, hornbills, and owls.

DAY 6 - Twyfelfontein Rock Art & Damara Living Museum

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein in Damaraland is home to one of the largest collections of ancient rock-art engravings found in Southern Africa.

The name ‘Twyfelfontein’ translates to ‘Fountain of Doubt’, referring to the spring that attracted Stone Age hunters to this area over six thousand years ago. We will explore the artwork from wonderfully shady campsites along the Aba-Huab riverbed. The whole area is characterised by natural wonders such as Doros Crater, Burnt Mountain, Organ Pipes, Petrified Forest and desert adapted animals – of which the desert adapted elephant is probably the most well-known species.
There will also be some time to observe and experience the traditional Damara way of life right in the heart of their traditional homelands with a visit to the Damara Living Museum- a unique opportunity to see a way of life that is slowly disappearing.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Twyfelfontein Country Lodge

DAY 7 - Cape Cross Seal Colony & Swakopmund

Today we reach Namibia’s spectacularly scenic coastline. We will enjoy an excursion to Cape Cross Seal Colony. This colony is one of the largest in the world, home to approximately 80,000 to 100,000 of these so-called 'seals', which are in fact a species of sea lion. The seals can be viewed from a walkway at a distance of roughly 200 metres.

The seaside town of Swakopmund is our destination this afternoon. Swakopmund is known for its wide-open avenues, colonial architecture, and its surrounding otherworldly desert terrain. Founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa, Swakopmund is occasionally described as being more German than Germany. We will enjoy a short orientation tour together before we arrive at the hotel for check-in.

Included meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Accommodation: Desert Sands Boutique, Swakopmund

DAY 8 - Swakopmund, Day at Leisure

Today will be a day at leisure to follow your own interests in Swakopmund. You may wish to hunt out the excellent local museums, visit the National Marine Aquarium or just relax and stroll along the beach and jetty to make the most of the cool ocean breezes - your Big Journey Company Tour Director is on hand for advice today, to give you more information about the private tours that may be available from town.

Included meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Desert Sands Boutique, Swakopmund

DAY 9 - Sossusvlei, Namib Desert-Naukluft National Park & Walvis Bay Lagoon

Today’s first destination is the iconic red sand dunes of the Namib in the scenic Namib-Naukluft National Park. Here the clear blue skies contrast with the giant red dunes to make this one of the most scenic natural wonders of Africa and a photographer's heaven. Its unique dunes rising to almost 400 metres - some of the highest in the world! Sossusvlei is also home to a variety desert wildlife including oryx, springbok, ostrich and a variety of reptiles.

Walvis Bay Lagoon is our next stop. Walvis Bay’s calm natural lagoon is a twitcher’s paradise, teeming with roughly 50 species of seabirds, including vivid flocks of flamingos, bulky-billed pelicans and glossy black cormorants. We will spend some time here before travelling on to tonight’s accommodation, nestled in a wide grassy valley sheltered by the Nubib, Tsaris and Naukluft Mountains with a view reaching the distant dunes of the Namib. Here we will enjoy the final remnants of the day see nature at her most profound - rugged landscapes bathed in hues of pastel ... a truly humbling experience.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Desert Homestead Lodge

DAY 10 - Dead Vlei & Sesriem Canyon

Dead Vlei is an ancient clay pan that was once an oasis, studded with acacias and fed by a river. When that river suddenly changed course, the earth was left to dry up along with the trees it previously supported. So dry were the climatic conditions that these trees never decomposed – instead they were entirely leached of moisture. Today, 900 years later, they remain as desiccated, blackened sentinels dotting the pan’s cracked surface. Surrounded by the red-pink dunes of the Namibia Desert, they create a surreal spectacle that is a wildlife spotter's dream.

Next we head to Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water. This striking natural feature is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem' – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon. Today we will explore the local wildlife in the company of our experienced local guide.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Desert Homestead Lodge

DAY 11 - Return to Windhoek

Today we journey from the Namib Desert to Windhoek. There will be several rest stops en route. We will stop at Lake Oanob, just north of Rehoboth for lunch. We will arrive back in the city mid-afternoon in time to check in to our hotel and refresh ourselves before enjoying a Farewell Dinner together this evening at one of Windhoek’s most impressive venues.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Farewell Dinner
