This Journey is packed with experiences to absorb the rich culture, tastes, sights and sounds of the meditteranean region. Venice is one of the most alluring cities in the world- a city of 118 islands, separated by canals on a lagoon in the sea. Soak up the sights and sounds and renaissance architecture on a city tour. 

Then it's onward to a lesser known but equally beautiful exploration of the Adriatic. The Istrian peninsula of Croatia, on the northern-most arm of the Meditteranean sea, is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic and has an impressive, verdant coastline. The Roman ruins in Pula include the famous and well-preserved Roman ampitheatre. Plitvice Lakes, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are unique to the world with 16 lakes connected with waterfalls. Take in tours of golden islands in the sea and explore Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic. Experience the rich history of Sovenia at Predjama Castle,and explore the largest known cave system in Slovenia at Postojna.

DAY 1 - Welcome to Venice

Upon arrival at the airport, we will be transferred to our hotel. The rest of the day will be spent at leisure before a welcome dinner together this evening at our hotel where you will meet the rest of your tour group and hear further details of this Adriatic exploration from your Big Journey Tour Director.

DAY 2 - Venice to Opatija, Croatia

This morning we will explore Venice. First we take a train from Venice-Mestre into the centre of Venice. Venice is always a joy to discover. Beginning at St. Mark’s Square we will enjoy a walking tour to see the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basilica, the Campanile and the Bridge of Sighs.
After some free time for lunch, take the train back to the hotel where will be transferred by coach to Opatija in Croatia. We will

DAY 3 - Istrian Peninsula

Today we enjoy an excursion to Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. We will visit the city of Pula, the National Park Brijuni and Motovun. Pula is one of Istria's most authentic and complex cities known for its impressive Roman ruins and a verdant coastline. The walking tour takes you to the old city of Pula, where you can see and learn about all the important monuments, and the rich history of this town. The view of the Pula region is framed by the Brijuni National Park, a gem in Istria's natural heritage. With its fourteen islands and islets of exceptional beauty, the remains of Roman villas and forts, the Brijuni islands are a wonderful blend of nature and culture. Our next stop is Motovun, only accessible by public buses. Standing proud on the peaks of hills rising from the fertile valley of River Mirna, Motovun is renowned for its architecture and its numerous art galleries. On your trip you’ll be able to enjoy the authentic food of Istria during your lunch break.
We return to Opatija for the evening and dinner is at your leisure.

DAY 4 - Opatija

This morning we will enjoy a guided walking tour of Opatija. Opatija is a tranquil resort on the corner of the Istrian peninsula. Its mild climate and stunning setting have made it a favourite holiday destination. Opatija is one of those rare resorts with something for everyone. After your tour, the rest of the day is at leisure for shopping and enjoying this beautiful place at your own pace.

DAY 5 - Postojna Caves & Ljubljana, Slovenia

Today we visit Slovenia, including both the nation’s capital city, Ljubjana, and the charming caves of Postojna. Ljubljana is lovely capital city, calm and yet very alive, situated on Ljubljanica River, where the locals like to spend time. The city centre is very picturesque with colourful houses, green areas and many attractions. Discover beautiful bridges, buildings, statues, markets and historical facts covering 5,000 years of Ljubljana's history.
A visit to Predjama Castle is next; one of the most unusual castles in Slovenia, built into a high overhanging cliff face. During your excursion you’ll have time to enjoy and absorb Slovenian surrounding with lunch in one of the typical restaurants.
Today we will also visit the Postojna system, the largest known cave system in Slovenia and also one of the largest in the world. A small cave train will take you on a tour around the caves to discover a wonderful underground labyrinth of tunnels, passageways and chambers, full of dripstones of amazing shapes.
We will travel back to Opatija and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant this evening.

DAY 6 - Day at Leisure

Today is a full day at your leisure to explore the area or enjoy the hotel's facilities.

DAY 7 - Krk Island

After breakfast, we transfer to Krk island. Called the Golden Island since ancient times due to its mild climate, lush vegetation and favourable position in the Kvarner Bay, the island of Krk is the largest island in the Adriatic. The island of Krk is a cradle of culture and literacy as demonstrated by its many monuments, museums and religious buildings. Explore Krk’s medieval town centre and perhaps visit the Baska tablet in Jurandvor or the Franciscan monastery on the islet of Kosljun. Thanks to the eco-projects and a systematic concern for cleanliness and environmental protection, the island of Krk is a haven of pristine beaches and waters. In the afternoon we return to Opatija and tonight we'll enjoy dinner together in a local restaurant.

DAY 8 - Day at Leisure

Today is a full day at leisure to explore the area and enjoy the hotels facilities. Your Big Journey Tour Director is on hand to help with suggestions and aid in planning your excursions if you would like.

DAY 9 - Opatija & Plitvice to Zadar

Depart from Opatija this morning in the direction of Plitvice, followed with a tour of the Plitvice Lakes National Park. This is Croatia’s best known national park and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unique in the world, the park’s 16 small lakes are joined by waterfalls. Panoramic electric trains and the noiseless electric powered boats will
transport us around the park today, or if you'd like to stretch your legs then the network of paths allows good access to the waterfalls and rocky lake shores.
We continue on to Zadar where we will have dinner in a local restaurant before returning to the hotel.

DAY 10 - Zadar & Split to Dubrovnik

We check out of the hotel after breakfast and begin our journey to Dubrovnik visiting Split en-route. Our first stop in Zadar is the “Morske Orgulje”, or Sea Organ, which plays music using waves coming from the sea. Embedded in the footpath near the organ is the “Pozdrav Suncu”, or ‘Greetings to the Sun’ light installation. After a short Zadar city tour, the day continues in Split, from where one of the most successful Roman emperors, Valerius Diocletioanus, ruled the Roman Empire 1700 years ago. Today Split is the second largest city in Croatia. During this city tour we travel through time and experience Split’s must– see art and architecture. The tour will take you through the 1700 year old Diocletian’s Palace and show you a number of hidden alleys. On the way to Dubrovnik we will stop in Ston for dinner, before heading to check in to our hotel.

DAY 11 - Dubrovnik

We start the day with a walking tour of the city of Dubrovnik. The old city is surrounded by a circuit of city walls, over a mile in length and with a tower in each corner. The walls are a masterpiece of medieval and renaissance architecture. We also stroll along the centuries-old main city promenade called Stradun. At one end of this street there is a 14th-century Franciscan Monastery whose cloister ranks among the most inspiring sites of the city having one of the Europe’s oldest pharmacy which is still open and in use! At the other end, you will see the church of St. Blaise, the Sponza Palace, and the Rector's Palace. The afternoon is free to explore, and dinner will be at leisure.

DAY 12 - Peljesac Peninsula and Korcula Island

Today we will enjoy a full day excursion to Peljesac peninsula and Korcula island. The Peljesac Peninsula is relatively under populated and retains a thriving agricultural economy, especially in winemaking. Dingac and Postup wine from Peljesac are appreciated throughout Croatia.
Peljesac faces Korcula Island which we will reach by boat today. The jewel of the island is undoubtedly Korcula Town, a cluster of remarkable Venetian architecture on a narrow peninsula. We will enjoy a traditional lunch in Korcula, following this enjoy some free time in the town.
After full day out, we return to Dubrovnik in the evening and enjoy a farewell dinner together at a restaurant in town.

DAY 13 - Goodbye to Croatia & Home

After breakfast we will check out of the hotel and be transferred to Dubrovnik airport for our flights back home.
