DAY 1 - Welcome to Moscow

Upon arrival in Moscow, you will be transferred to your hotel which located in the historic city centre near the spectacular Bolshoi Theatre and the iconic Moscow Kremlin. You are free to explore the city this afternoon. This evening we will gather together with your Big Journey Tour Director and the rest of the tour group to discuss the journey ahead.

DAY 2 - Moscow City Tour

We will start the day today with an orientation city tour of Moscow and proceed to the famous Novodevichi Cemetery which holds the tombs of Russian authors, musicians, playwrights, and poets, as well as famous actors, political leaders, and scientists.
The afternoon will be spent at leisure to explore Moscow at your own pace. Ask you Big Journey Tour Director if you would liek to seek out a cultural performance at one of the city’s renowned venues.

DAY 3 - Kremlin and Cathedrals Tour

Following breakfast this morning you will visit the Kremlin, home to the Armoury Museum. Here we will view the collection of opulent coronation finery, hand-forged armour and weapons, royal carriages and sleighs. Continue on to the beautifully frescoed 15th-century Assumption and Archangel cathedrals.
The rest of the day will be spent at leisure for independent exploration or optional tours at your choice. Ask your Big Journey Tour Director for more information on what's available today.

DAY 4 - Tretyakov Gallery and Embarkation

After breakfast this morning, you will have some free time to explore the area and find an early lunch.
At noon, we will check-out from our hotel and proceed to the Tretyakov Gallery, the first museum dedicated exclusively to Russian fine art. From here we will explore Moscow’s Metro, known for its architectural splendour and then transfer to the awaiting luxurious cruise ship to begin sailing along the Russian waterways.
We will gather together for the Captain's welcome reception and dinner as we begin our cruise this evening.

DAY 5 - Uglich

After a full day of cruising through forested countryside, we dock in the ancient trading town of Uglich, one of the spokes of Russia’s renowned Golden Ring. The ‘Golden Ring’ is a series of medieval towns with monasteries, churches, cathedrals and kremlins, that collect around a thousand years of Russian Orthodox history. We will explore the impressive Church of St. Dmitri-on-the-Blood, erected on the site where Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible, was murdered in 1591, and attend an enchanting concert of choral music at St. Johns Church.

DAY 6 - Yaroslavl

Founded in 1010, Yaroslavl is one of the oldest cities in central Russia and the Volga’s first port. WE will come ashore again today to explore the town of Yaroslavl. In the Spassky Monastery we will see the Transfiguration of the Saviour and admire the mosaics at the Church of Elijah the Prophet. We will also take part in a costumed reception at the governor’s house, before we reboard the cruise ship in time for lunch.

DAY 7 - Goritsy

In the tiny settlement of Goritsy we will visit the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, founded in 1397. This is now home to one of the best collections of Russian icons in the world. After a guided tour, we rejoin our cruise ship to continue cruising toward the majestic Lake Onega.

DAY 8 - Kizhi

The Kareliya region, which spans the area from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle, is a vast wilderness of forest and water. Today we discover this area and Lake Onega for ourselves. Fed by 58 rivers, Lake Onega is home to 1,369 islands, including the island of Kizhi. Here we will disembark to see a collection of ancient Russian wooden houses and windmills and the famous Transfiguration church, which was built in 1714 without a single nail.

DAY 9 - St. Svir River & Village of Mandrogi

While cruising along the 139-mile-long Svir River, you will have time to appreciate the quiet, understated beauty of a region that has long inspired artists and poets. The ship passes quaint riverside hamlets before reaching Lake Ladoga. Here we step ashore for a little free time, to the vacation village of Mandrogi to experience daily life in a quaint wooden village on your own.

DAY 10 - Disembark & St. Petersburg

Today we arrive in St. Petersburg via the Neva River and disembark the cruise ship.
We will enjoy a city tour of St. Petersburg, including Peter and Paul Fortress, the burial place of the Romanov monarchs, and the Nevsky Prospect, where fine shops, cafes, and museums are easily found.
Following lunch, we enter the renowned Hermitage Museum, home to one of the most important collections of European art in the world before checking int our hotel for the evening.

DAY 11 - Peterhof Palace

Today starts with a visit to the meticulously restored Peterhof Palace, St. Petersburg’s most famous and spectacular Imperial estate. Commissioned by Peter the Great in 1709 as Russia's answer to the building of Versailles in Paris, this is a real showcase for the opulence of the Kaiser and workmanship of Russia in the 18th century. Visit the authentic Bath Cottage and stroll in the vast Lower Park with 176 fountains of various forms and styles and four cascades, majestic palaces and numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes. The rest of the day is at your leisure to explore your surroundings.

DAY 12 - Palace of Catherine the Great & Faberge Museum

Following breakfast this morning, we travel to Catherine the Great’s Palace. Here we will see the extraordinary Amber Room, with six tons of solid amber deftly carved and framed in gold leaf. Once deemed the “eighth wonder of the world,” the room was stripped by the Nazis in 1941, but has now been majestically reconstructed in honour of St. Petersburg’s 300th birthday.
After lunch at a restaurant in a traditional Russian log house in Podvorie, we will return to St. Petersburg and visit the Faberge museum. This museum contains the world's largest collection of works by Carl Faberge, including nine Easter eggs commissioned by the Russian royal family.

DAY 13 - Farewell to St. Petersburg & Home

After breakfast this morning, we will check out from the hotel and transfer to the airport in time for our flight home.
